Interview – Tunde Adebimpe Lives Out His Life-long Fandom in ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’

The Star Wars franchise has always been about that youthful sense of adventure and desire to explore beyond our boundaries. With the latest series, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, the kids take center stage, as a young team of misfits find themselves on an unexpected adventure across the galaxy.

Tunde Adebimpe, who plays Wendle, a father to one of the members of the crew, understands that sense of wonder well. He has been a Star Wars fan since the age of 8, and is getting to realize his space fantasy as part of this new series.

Senior Writer Jorgie Rodriguez recently had a chance to chat with Adebimpe, an actor and composer who has some experience with large franchises, having recently starred in the sequel disaster film Twisters.

“My Star Wars story is that around age eight I was introduced to Star Wars by my older brother and dad, and have been steadily obsessed with it basically my entire life. So I’m a very, very big fan,” Adebimpe said about his love of the franchise.

As such a huge fan of the entire franchise, it’s understandably a mixed experience to one day find yourself as an actual character in the Galaxy Far, Far Away. For Adebimpe, he shared that he felt both excitement and fear.

“Of course there’s this part of me that’s always, you never want to get too excited for something because you don’t want it to go the other way, but with this, [I was] very excited]. And then when I got the call, it was this combination of pure excitement and then like really bright, hot fear of, ‘Oh no. Don’t mess this up at all!’ you know,” Adebimpe said. “Getting on the set the first day and being immersed in that world, I guess the fear was still there, but the excitement definitely, definitely overtook it. And yeah, a great, great, great, great experience that I’m, a lot of times, pinching myself.”
