In honor of Black History Month, Marvel Entertainment and SiriusXM are releasing a documentary podcast, The History of Marvel Comics: Black Panther. Hosted by New York Times best-selling author Nic Stone, who also wrote the YA book Shuri, the podcast will do a deep dive on the history of Marvel’s first Black superhero.
Stone will host an all-star lineup of guests who all played major roles in shaping the character of T’Challa, and the world of Wakanda. Featured guests include Brian Stelfreeze, Christopher Priest, Don McGregor, Joe Quesada, John Ridley, John Romita Jr., Reginald Hudlin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and more.
“As thrilling as it’s been to watch Marvel’s first Black super hero leap his way to the top of fan-favorite lists over the past few years, getting to dig into his origin story with the people who made him (and the characters around him) is truly the coolest thing I’ve ever gotten to do,” said host Nic Stone in a press release by Marvel. “I can’t wait for fans to hear from the individuals who have spent almost 60 years shaping, expanding, and humanizing our beloved King of Wakanda and Black Panther, especially as his world continues to grow.”
As someone who has read virtually every modern Black Panther comic, I’m genuinely excited about this podcast. Black Panther and the world of Wakanda have become incredibly popular thanks in large part to the massively successful film, and Marvel has capitalized on that popularity in recent years with an amazing line-up of talented creators on the book. There aren’t many comics that can boast creatives like New York Times best-selling author Ta-Nehisi Coates and Academy Award winning screenwriter John Ridley. It will be interesting to see how in-depth this podcast goes and what fascinating nuggets are revealed.
The six-episode podcast premieres February 14th exclusively on SiriusXM and Marvel Podcasts Unlimited on Apple Podcasts, and episodes will be widely available on other platforms one week after release.
