T’Nia Miller on Jocasta’s Deadly Side and Working with James Spader in ‘VisionQuest’

Marvel Television’s VisionQuest introduces audiences to a highly anticipated new character in Jocasta, played by T’Nia Miller. Introduced in the comics as “Ultron’s Bride,” the powerful artificial intelligence character brings a combination of emotional depth and unpredictability to the world of Vision and his AI crew.

In an exclusive interview with POC Culture, Miller discussed her excitement about finally joining Marvel, the complexity of bringing Jocasta to life, and her experience working alongside James Spader, who reprises his role as Ultron.

T’Nia Miller on Jocasta’s Extraordinary Powers and Humanity

For Miller, who is known for delivering layered performances, the opportunity to play Jocasta in the MCU was the realization of a childhood dream.

“I have to admit when they said, ‘Do you want to play a robot?’ I’m like, ‘Yes.’ Because it’s stuff of childhood dreams, isn’t it?” Miller said.

However, what makes Jocasta particularly compelling is that her powers are accompanied by a deeply personal struggle to understand her own identity and purpose.

“On one hand, she’s this eight-foot robot with the ability to wipe out the whole planet,” Miller explained. “And yet she’s in her infancy of working out who she is, what her place is.”

Miller emphasized the importance of bringing humanity to a character who could easily be defined by her artificial nature. The result is a character whose terrifying power contrasts with her desire for connection and understanding.

Working with James Spader as Ultron

One of the most important relationships in VisionQuest is the evolving dynamic between Miller’s Jocasta and James Spader’s Ultron.

Surprisingly, Miller revealed that she and Spader had never participated in a chemistry read or spent time together before filming.

“The first time I met James was on set,” Miller said.

Despite their unfamiliarity, Miller found that the characters’ relationship developed naturally as production progressed, which was supported by the fact that they primarily filmed the episodes in order.

“As the show went on, as the months and weeks rolled by, I just fell more and more in love with this man,” Miller said, noting that their growing connection mirrored the relationship developing between their characters.

Miller also recalled how her audition scene captured Jocasta’s contrasting personality traits, revealing a character capable of shifting from charm to danger.

“She’s very seductive and then she threatens to kill him,” Miller said, laughing as she described the audition read.

For Miller, that single sequence encapsulated the many sides of Jocasta and helped her understand the character from the very beginning.
