Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy, the live action retelling of Peter Pan, is set to release this week on Disney+. Directed by David Lowery, the film brings to life the classic story of Wendy Darling’s (Ever Anderson) adventure to Neverland with Peter Pan (Alexander Molony) and Tinker Bell (Yara Shahidi). Among Peter Pan’s crew of friends in Neverland is Tiger Lily (Alyssa Wapanatâhk), a warrior princess of Neverland’s Indigenous tribe.
I recently had the opportunity to speak with Wapanatâhk about her role in the film. Wapanatâhk is of Cree heritage, and she spoke on creating representation for her community (Bigstone Cree First Nation). She talked about how her family and community are reacting to this film and her role as a huge moment for indigenous people, and how Tiger Lily has come a long way. Wapanatâhk also spoke about the importance of playing a character that a new generation will see themselves represented by.
