It’s not often that a film trailer is so epic and awesome that the film immediately becomes a must-watch. However, the new trailer for The Creator is so spectacular that its release has cemented the film as one of the most anticipated of the year. Directed by Gareth Edwards and starring John David Washington, the trailer does a perfect job of summarizing the fascinating plot of the film while surrounded by jaw-dropping visuals.
The general story feels like something we’ve all seen before in films like The Terminator and The Matrix. Mankind is fighting artificial intelligence for survival and an ex-special forces agent, played by John David Washington, is tasked with a mission that could save humanity. However, this one has a Lone Wolf & Cub element mixed in, as the key to the mission is an AI in the form of a young child. Of course, we saw this welcome story trope executed to near perfection recently in the critically acclaimed video game series The Last of Us by HBO.
The film looks like a visual feast, in the very capable hands of Gareth Edwards, who directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla (2014) and the underrated Monsters.
The timing of the film’s release is certainly serendipitous (though not necessarily for humanity), as artificial intelligence is one of the hottest topics right now and there’s reasonable anxiety about how AI will impact our lives in the very near future. It’s always more interesting when art has worthwhile commentary on life, and I hope that The Creator will give us something to chew on while being entertained.
The film also stars Gemma Chan and Ken Watanabe, and in the brief glimpses of the trailer, it seems like many of the AI beings are played by Asian actors. I wonder if all of the AI beings are Asian presenting, and what the intent of that story point might be. Notably, Gemma Chan plays the wife of John David Washington’s character, who has disappeared. Chan is either conspicuously absent from the trailer, or at least not easily identifiable, which has to be an intentional creative decision. There are clearly some secrets that the trailer is keeping hidden.
There’s so much intrigue built from the trailer alone and it’s well worth watching several times.
The Creator premieres in theaters September 29th and has immediately catapulted into my top 3 most anticipated films of the year!
