The entertainment industry is filled with a great many unsung heroes. From the grips and lighting teams, to the VFX and Editing crews, there are people, groups, and even entire independent studios that make the wheels spin and make the AAA films and even the indie pictures go round. For its part, the 26th Annual Golden Trailer Awards (GTA) continues its tradition of bringing a very underrepresented segment of Hollywood to the forefront.
For the uninitiated, The Golden Trailer Awards is an unconventional ceremony celebrating the camaraderie and competitiveness of the creative marketing community, while honoring excellence in the best feature film, television, digital and print campaigns of the year. Highly anticipated by industry professionals, the GTAs recognize the trailers, posters, and innovative, new experiential concepts, as well as the ideas which drive the movie and tv industries. Presented live on stage, categories recognize the serious and the lighthearted, including Best Summer Blockbuster Trailer, and Best of Show, among others.

Arriving at the classical Saban Theatre in Los Angeles, it was an uncharacteristically, but very much welcomed, chilly sunset. I got there early enough to securing parking around the corner of the old venue (a miracle to say the least), and early enough still to have the opportunity to speak with several film industry vets on the red carpet before the creatives and crew migrated from the grand lobby to inside the theater.
With a line around the block and a full house packed with journalists, industry insiders and film-lovers alike inside, GTA26 was off to an amazing start, and the frenetic and passionate energy held through the night of festivities and spilled onto the sidewalks upon wrap, where some of Hollywood’s most brilliant minds hung out at the taco trucks, networking, reflecting and celebrating.
Morgan Jay Keeps the Crowd Laughing
This year, the Master of Ceremonies was the incredibly poised and insanely clever comedian Morgan Jay. Not just a master of social media, but the king of crowd-work with his own brand of comedy, Jay kept the auditorium in an uproar. This year’s presenters included: Morgan Jay, Chanel Ali (Stand Up Comedian), Kate Flannery (The Office), Neal McDonough (Band of Brothers), Brittany Schmitt (Comedian), Leah Rudick (Comedian) and Page Kennedy (The Meg).
A Night Defined by Community and Collaboration
“It’s so much fun, everyone here has a great time,” said Neal McDonough, co-writer and co-producer of “The Last Rodeo,” which was nominated for Best Faith Based Trailer at the ceremony. “Everyone’s loose, it’s not too serious. So for us, tonight, we’re just blessed that our trailer is in competition for best films in Las Vegas.”
“These filmmakers of these trailers hold the golden ticket,” McDonough’s wife and producing partner Ruve noted. “Because if that trailer is amazing, people are gonna go watch the film…so they’re [a] very integral part of the film. Because that’s the first look! So trailers are so important.”

And indeed, there was an air of camaraderie throughout the entire night, as opposed to the competitive tension you’d usually get at these types of awards shows. Where more the sentiment would typically center around “Who did I do better than at which thing?” the GTAs lean towards the attitude of “Look how cool your thing is!” where everyone is a filmmaker and a creative and all can cheer for what the other has going on, and recognize the blood, sweat and tears that go into one of the most overlooked aspects of the industry.
Tiny Hero and Other Industry Standouts
Entertainment marketing agency Tiny Hero not only had their own step-and-repeat plus glambot area at the venue, they had a massive showing, securing 34 nominations (including a finalist nod for Agency of the Year) and bringing home multiple major awards for their digital and trailer campaigns.
