When the teaser trailer for the upcoming Barbie film dropped last December, it didn’t give away much. It was hard to tell from that sneak peak what the film was about. We saw little more than the main stars, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and a preview of some of the hilarious tone of the film.
Finally, Warner Bros. has released the first full trailer for Barbie, and it looks even more wild than expected. Feeling like a clash of reality and make-believe, the trailer says that it’s both for those who love Barbies and those who hate them. The humor and irreverence for the iconic dolls are apparent, and the story seems like it should have some interesting commentary on society. It looks like a splash of Toy Story, Elf and even The Matrix, all centered around Robbie and Gosling’s talents.
It’s refreshing for a studio to bring in a director like Greta Gerwig and let her play around with the story of these dolls that have been around forever and have a massive fanbase, but also have somewhat of a layered history. I love that the trailer is recognizing and embracing the fact that some people absolutely love Barbies and some can’t stand them. The question of course is what this story has to say about both groups.
Barbie premieres July 21st in the U.S. and July 19th internationally.
