Aaron Pierre, one of the hottest actors in the industry today, is set to put on the green ring of power as the Green Lantern John Stewart in HBO’s upcoming series Lanterns. Rumored to be one of the top actors considered for the role, HBO and DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn formally announced the casting today.

Pierre, who broke out as the lead in the Netflix film Rebel Ridge and is also set to voice Mufasa in the upcoming Lion King prequel film Mufasa: The Lion King, has quickly become one of the most popular and in-demand actors in Hollywood. As evidenced by his performance in Rebel Ridge, he should bring a physicality and a charismatic presence that the beloved character of John Stewart deserves.

In conjunction with this announcement, HBO also released the official logline for the series:

The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Pierre presumably joins Kyle Chandler, who is reportedly set to play the role of the other well known Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. The two would be a fantastic start for the series, which fans desperately want to be good after a highly disappointing Green Lantern film in 2011 which starred Ryan Reynolds.

Old school comic fans may be more familiar with Jordan, but Stewart quickly became one of the most popular Green Lanterns in the DC roster of heroes with his memorable depiction in the beloved animated series Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, where he was voiced by legendary Phil LaMarr

Lanterns is created by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The series is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, with the first two episodes directed by James Hawes. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, King and Hawes. Based on the DC comic “Green Lantern.”
