It’s been far too long since the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been on Disney+. The last series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, ended in October 2022 and after a robust Phase Four full of content, it’s been far too quiet. Thankfully, the MCU is back this June with Secret Invasion and Marvel is breaking out an exceptional marketing campaign for the occasion.
Today, fans were treated to cryptic Tweets from the official Secret Invasion account, that seemed to share pieces of an image that resembled a board of evidence and clues. Eventually, all of the image pieces were revealed to show images and notes related to Skrulls, Nick Fury and the Avengers. My favorite Easter Egg in the revealed image is the photo of the marquee at the Coronet Theater in San Francisco, CA, which is an iconic, single-screen theater that sadly closed down in 2005.
Fans were then encouraged to visit a mysterious website, theinvasionhasbegun.com, and input a password to be gleaned from the puzzle image. It took me a while to figure out exactly what the password was, especially considering that some of the highlighted or circled letters and numbers on the image are quite small, but thanks to some assistance from other Twitter detectives (and a cleverly edited follow up Tweet from the official account that actually revealed the password), the password was revealed: RSD3PX5N7S.
Fans who followed the breadcrumbs and were treated to five minutes of footage from the series, which focuses on what looks like former CIA Agent, Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman), meeting with an individual who tells him about a pending invasion by the Skrulls. By the end of the clip, I suspect it will be revealed that the character we see isn’t actually Ross at all, but a Skrull disguised to look like Ross. Especially considering the end of Wakanda Forever, the idea that Ross is still working for a government agency, even one that is super off the books, is highly unlikely.
After the five minutes of footage, a new special trailer was also revealed, which has been shared by Marvel Studios.
This kind of unique and creative marketing is extremely rare for any project, and it’s exciting to see Marvel Studios go the extra mile for a series that may very well be critical to the future of the MCU. It also shows how excited the studio is about the upcoming series, and it’s about time Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury gets his own story.
Secret Invasion premieres June 21st on Disney+!
