We’re now just about three months away from the long awaited theatrical return of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recently, Marvel Studios announced that Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, would be premiering on July 9th in theaters and on Disney+.
Today, Marvel Studios released a new trailer for the film, just over one year after the release of the first trailer. Of course, much has changed in that year, but it’s a nice feeling to know that Black Widow finally has a firm release date, and that it will be available on Disney+ for those who aren’t yet ready to return to theaters.
The trailer itself is jaw dropping, highlighting some truly inspired stunt choreography that might just set a new standard for blockbuster action. The Black Widow stunt team includes James Young, who served as fight coordinator and worked on previous MCU projects like Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers Endgame, and stunt coordinator Rob Inch, who comes from a galaxy far far away, having worked on Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Beyond the action though, the trailer features a haunting new twist on the Avengers film score, and I simply wasn’t prepared for how many emotions would hit me upon hearing that music again in a theatrical trailer.
There are some who say that this film is several years too late. And when it was announced, I was certainly one of those who was confused as to why Marvel Studios was going to kick off “Phase Four” with a film starring a character who (spoiler!) died in the previous phase.
There’s no denying though that Kevin Feige and his team have a clear big picture plan, and it’s no accident that this film is happening now. At a minimum, it seems clear that Florence Pugh’s Yelena is not only an important character for this film, but that she is likely to play a role in the larger MCU going forward.
