The highly anticipated documentary, Stephen Curry: Underrated, is set to release in select theaters and Apple TV+ on July 21, 2023. The documentary follows Curry’s career from small town Davidson College to becoming one of the greatest players in NBA history with the Golden State Warriors.
It’s a little unusual to get a biographical documentary for an active player, especially one who is about to defend the NBA World Championship in the coming weeks, but Curry’s story is so unique that it’s worth telling now. The timing likely hints at the focus of the film, which is probably more about his improbable journey to becoming a NBA superstar, rather than the entirety of his career.
As a huge NBA fan, I distinctly remember watching an impossibly slender Curry score 40 points and upset Gonzaga University in the NCAA tournament in 2008. Curry was truly a one-man team and led Davidson to the Elite 8 that year; all the while looking like a 12-year-old kid wearing his father’s basketball uniform. Even after an unstoppable college career, very few people expected Curry to succeed in the NBA. It’s one thing to surprise a bunch of college teams; it’s another to battle against the most elite athletes in the world.
Of course, anybody who knows anything about the NBA knows that against all odds, Curry has not only become one of the best players in basketball history and led a NBA dynasty with the Warriors, but he completely revolutionized the game of basketball.
From Apple Original Films and A24, and directed by Peter Nicks, who won an Emmy for his reporting on illegal human trafficking during the Iraq War and has directed several critically acclaimed documentaries, Underrated should be a must watch for any fan of basketball, underdogs and inspirational stories.
Ryan Coogler, who is a Bay Area legend and former elite athlete in his own right, is a producer, along with Erick Peyton, Sean Havey, Ben Cotner and Marissa Torres Ericson. Emily Osborne, Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler are executive producers.
Underrated premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and last night screened at SFFILM Festival, where Coogler and Nicks were among those in attendance. I assume Curry was just a few miles away in Sacramento preparing for his upcoming playoff game against the Sacramento Kings.
